Soda Fire Workshop with Damian Grava – October 9th – 12th
October 9th: 10 am at PNW – glaze, wad, load, brick door.
October 10th: 7am light kiln, fire all day & night
October 12th: 5pm unload kiln, discuss results, clean kiln and equipment.

This is an intensive weekend workshop exploring the potentials within the soda glazing world. Damian has used his background in geology as a springboard in studying materials relative to soda firing. His most recent explorations have branched off from studies with Gail Nichols' soda entry technique and reduction cooling cycles. This workshop will focus on these techniques at cone 9-10, using a variety of Damian's flashing slips designed to respond beautifully in this environment. Wally Bivins has so graciously lent us use of the studio and kiln at Pottery Northwest for this experience.

$180 per person (limited to ten people), which includes:
Flashing Slips and glazes, both recipes and ready for use at time of loading. Discussions regarding loading, firing, clay bodies, local materials. Exploration of alternative loading and firing techniques. Reduction cooling experience for dramatic surface highlights. Potting demos during firing.

All cone 10 clay bodies and slips will work fine; only use stable cone 10 glazes. Bare clay and slip on the outside is favorable in this firing. Use liner glaze on interiors. There will be more information for registered participants closer to the firing.
